The ellipsis consists of three dots used to show that the writer has left out a word or words. The ellipsis is mainly used to cut out unnecessary words in quotations.
Note: Never use more than three dots in the middle of a sentence. Use four dots to show missing words at the end of the sentence.
Use the ellipsis to show:
The omission of words.
The teacher said, “All pupils, both boys and girls, must leave now”.
The teacher said, “All pupils…must leave now”.
Note: Add a fourth dot to show omission at the end of a sentence.
