Dashes are of two kinds: single and double. By using dashes, you make your words stand out and add variety to your writing. Words enclosed by dashes, or those that follow a dash to the end of the sentence, have extra force. Do not overuse dashes or it will lose its impact.
Use a single dash:
For emphasis
There are many facts – facts you don’t know.
To summarise a list or the previous words in the sentence
Pens, paper and pencils – all lay on the desk.
To show each missing letter
The b–––––d shot me!
Use double dashes:
To set off statements you want your reader to notice
Last week – even though I was sick – I had to go to work.
